Past Perfect Tense in English and Urdu with Example Sentences

Past Perfect Tense is used to describe those actions that begun in Past and got completed. Don't mess it with Past Continuous Tense. Because Past Continuous Tense describes the action that happened in past and continued for some time. Past Perfect Tense tells about an action, thing that started in past and then went to completion.

It is used to make clear that an action or event happened before another action or event in the past. It really does not matter which action or event happened first. It is the tense which will make clear which action happened first.

Third form of verb is used in Past Perfect Tense. The only helping verb used in this tense is “Had”. Had is the helping verb of this tense and is used with all the subjects (I, we, you, they, he, she, it, singular, plural).

One example of this tense is “I had eaten pizza”. Third form of verb is used with the helping verb “Had” because the action has been finished. Questions are indicated by inverting the subject and helping verb (had). Negatives are made with not.

Examples:

Positive : He had written

Question : Had he written?

Negative : He had not written

Simple/Positive Sentences: 

Simple Positive Sentences of Past Perfect Tense are very easy and simple to make. First we need to put a subject, then helping verb with third form of verb and last but not the least, object. Word order of  simple sentences of Past Perfect Tense is given as follows

subject + had + v3 + object

Negative Sentences: 

Sentence structure of  Negative Sentences is same as the positive sentences. We have to make only one change ” the addition of NOT”. Remaining structure will be same. Addition of NOT is the only change we have to make because the of title “Negative”. Word order is given as

subject + had + not + v3 + object

Interrogative Sentences

Interrogative Sentences are made by inverting subject and helping verbs. In interrogative sentences, helping verb is placed in the beginning of sentence. Whenever the helping verb is placed the subject, we would say that the sentence is Interrogative. Sentence structure of interrogative sentences of Past Perfect Tense is as follows:
