Apostrophe is one of the Punctuation marks and Apostrophe can be used for two purposes. In this lesson, you will learn all about apostrophe, its rules and examples.
Apostrophe
It is one of the punctuation marks which can be used for two purposes
- To show possessiveness
- To contract the words
Use of apostrophe to show possessiveness
Whenever we want to show the possession or we want to show a relation between two things or a person and a thing etc.
Khalid’s book | خالد کی کتاب | Ahmed’s pen | احمد کا قلم |
Book of khalid | خالد کی کتاب | Pen of ahmed | احمد کا قلم |
There are two ways to use apostrophe and both are correct. We may use any of these while writing
- Khalid’s book
- Book of Khalid
When we have a singular noun, then “S” will be put after the apostrophe
- Usama’s wife
- Ahmed’s car
When we have a plural noun, then “S” will be put before the apostrophe
- Boys’ books
- Girls’ dress
If there are already two “S” in the end of a singular noun, we will simply put the apostrophe after two S
- Class’ table
- Carcass’ smell
Use of apostrophe to make contractions
